Currently showing on BBC1, IPlayer and HBOMax, "Ghosts" is a witty existential sitcom from the team behind Horrible Histories (Matthew Baynton, Laurence Rickard, Jim Howick, Martha Howe-Douglas, Ben Willabond and Simon Farnaby). I worked on the show throughout the whole of lockdown, writing a huge variety of music, soundtracking everything from Regency parties to heists and blockbuster action!
Ralegh Longtag:www.raleghlong.com,2005:Post/64004852020-08-03T10:21:33+01:002020-08-05T00:56:52+01:00Song Stories

I thought I'd go through my old records and tell some of the stories, starting with my 2012 E.P The Gift. First up is 'Elizabeth'. I've taken over the "About" section of my Spotify for the purpose. I'll be using it as a blog. So head there via the link below, where you can read about how it came to life and have a listen back. The song is top of my artists pick.

This was the first recording session I'd done for my own work outside England, and, by coincidence, the trip occurred just before the spread of COVID-19 in Europe and the restrictions we now experience. I went to Berlin at the end of January, and met up with Joshcka Bender via an intro from my friend Sarah (Bryde). The day before the session I walked the route of the Berlin Wall with my old friend Oliver. We went in from the suburbs to the Reichstag. I was weak at the time because I had just recovered from a bad fever and cough, which had left me exhausted (Sound familiar? I have wondered, there's a reasonable possibility.) Oliver said the walk would be 3 hours, but it ended up more like 6 and took in at least 10 miles. I had a sprained ankle just from walking. At one point we stopped in a cafe and I remember reading on my phone that they had identified the first suspected Coronavirus case in Berlin. I guess I'll always remember that moment, it seems a long way from that day to now.

The song was written the next day, in 3 hours flat. When I arrived at the studio Joshcka made me some coffee and we listened to a beat he had going. I put some chords to it on the guitar, and we debated the changes and then recorded the chords on his immense analogue synth collection. I came up with a guide vocal, we replaced the synth with some guitar. Then in a 5 minute break I rewrote the verse melody. It was a bit high to sing, so we e changed the key, dropping it down from E minor to D minor. Did a take of the vocal (which ended up being the vocal). And then we needed a middle 8 so we came up with my favourite chord sequence in the whole song.

I don't know why I wrote all that, sometimes it's just nice to remember. If you made it through all that then I hope you enjoy the song!

I have a new single out today. It's about teenage friendships, playing bands, freedom and escape. As such I borrowed the name of XTC's spin-off band The Dukes of Stratosphear for the title, as they always talk about that band as a kind of escape from real life. It's a metaphor, I guess.

I am thrilled to announce that I have won the Help Musicians Uk / PledgeMusic Emerging Artists Award for my second album Upwards of Summer. The award is for independent artists with no outside funding with the "talent and DIY drive" to build a sustainable, long-term career. Chosen by a panel of industry experts, including Victoria Ree (Universal Music Group) and John Dawkins (Various Artists Management - Charli XCX, The Libertines, Spiritualized etc), the award offers funding and career development.

The award marks the culmination of a wild journey for this record. I am delighted and hugely grateful to win this award. This couldn't have been further from how I imagined things turning out. I made the record sort of as a last hurrah, as someone who'd almost given up; I never could have expected it would go on to win the Emerging Artists Award. At the end of 2016, I was worn out and disillusioned, largely from touring (the photo above was taken in the warehouses of Italian distributor Audioglobe on the first leg of the solo tour responsible for the burn out) but also from the intense workload of self-managing for many years, arranging everything from writing the song through artwork, vinyl runs, touring schedules, radio, releases, copyright, etc. I did genuinely find myself wondering whether I would continue making music. When I got back from the last leg of touring Hoverance I took a bit of time to reassess my priorities. During this time I did begin to write again, tentatively at first, just to please myself really. I also started digging back into my earliest inspirations. The first few days after that tour I went cycling in order to get some light and get over jet lag. I dug my old bike out of the shed and rode around listening to “Hey Jack Kerouac” by 10,000 Maniacs on repeat. I decided that if I was going to stop I should make one last record, something that would give me the euphoric lift I got from that song.

I went in the studio with Margo who I'd made Hoverance with, and with my touring band. We treated it like it was the last record and somehow that changed something significant about how I approached it. Fear went out the widow. I didn't doubt, I didn't second guess, I just trusted. This really helped to heal all the frustration and conflict I'd been feeling. Suddenly it was fun and vital again and not the source of worry and conflicted emotions it had become. Pretty soon after, Spotify picked up on the first single, supporting it on the Indie List, and Elton John picked up on it on his Beats1 show on Apple Music. Then I heard about Help Musicians UK and the Emerging Artists Award, and decided to apply.

I think it will be a real game-changer. By matching the pledge, it enables me to support the record in a way I never would have been able to before, hopefully reaching many more listeners. There's a real danger in self-releases that you spend months or years slaving over every detail of the work and then just chuck it out there with fingers crossed. We can now release 2 more singles from the record, and make 2 more videos, instead of just the one. Just last night I made a video with the excellent Katia Ganfield. I have also been able to consult with some real experts, such as Wrapped Up Music's Tim Ferrone. And beyond the funding, it's actually that realm of support and expertise, as well as the sense of community, that may be the most important aspect of the award. Oh, and of course, confidence! No-one really talks about this, but the psychological implications of getting this kind of support are real. I'd almost given up from going it alone, and to have people like this around me changes everything.

I would encourage anyone in a similar position to apply for this award. The deadline for the next funding round is the 31st July.

The next album, Upwards of Summer, almost didn't get made. Last year left me exhausted and unsure if I even wanted to carry on making music. But back from tour I started writing a little, just picking up the guitar and seeing what was there, playing for fun, with no immediate intention of recording these songs. One of the key things that changed all that was booking in for a tentative demo weekend with my band at Margo's Hermitage Works Studios. Everything came together in a was really exciting.

The studio is a funny place - an extremely artificial environment where people go to express something very real. I wanted to celebrate that in the video for "Take Your Mind Back". There's a whole strand of music video made in the 80's that encapsulates this. The videos purport to be straight performances of the actual take. But they are hilariously fake, with bad acting, cymbal zooms, pans and close ups. Notable examples include Womack and Womack's "Teardrops", Charlie Sexton's "Beat's so Lonely" and Eddie Murphy's "Party All the Time". Nodding to these was my way of celebrating the studio and the role it had in making me want to keep going.

However, last night I really was very glad to arrive in Turin.

The day began well, with an early train to Florence where, as you can see below, I met the great team from Audioglobe distribution and signed with them as my Italian distributors. We filmed a session in their warehouse, had a chat and did the paperwork. They are great and I'm very happy to be working with them.

On leaving Florence I thought I caught a train to Turin. It wound through hills and streams. It dropped me at a single track station deep in the woods. Something had gone wrong. Instead of Turin, I was in Ponte Della Venturina, in Emilia. Somehow the wrong ticket had been booked in haste in England, since Torino is spelt with a u in English. Ah. So I had to go back to Florence, changing in Pistoia - the same 1.5 hour journey I had just made.

Three hours into what should have been a three hour journey, I arrived back at Florence and caught the train to Turin, thereby turning a 3 hour journey into 6 hours. Suffice to stay this story went down a treat with the audience in Turin, especially since the club is called Da Emilia. I was the only one who'd come from Emilia that day! Astrologers claim that travel should return to normal now that Mercury is no longer in retrograde.

The gigs in Rome and Turin have been good. Tomorrow I am live on the MAPS radio show on Bologna city radio, at around 3.30 Italy time / 2.30 UK time. Apparently it's a very good show (recent guests include Hinds, Ash and Ethan Johns) so do tune in.

RaleghRalegh Longtag:www.raleghlong.com,2005:Post/40035762016-01-23T09:54:49+00:002020-09-05T11:50:14+01:00Italy...

I'm currently on tour in Italy. Palermo yesterday and today I'm in Rome, playing at Black Market tonight in Monti. Palermo is an amazing city. I Went to visit the prisons of the inquisition and walked around a fair bit of the city. I even managed by accident to try Palermo's most idiosyncratic street food - the spleen burger.

After Rome I head to Florence to film a live session (more on that soon) and then shows in Turin and Bologna. I'm also live on MAPS Radio Citta' Del Capo in Bologna on January 27th playing a couple of songs at 3.30pm Italian time.

Ralegh Long
